Day 1 Arrival Yangon
Today you arrive in Yangon, formerly known as Rangoon. After the Customs formalities are completed, you might exchange the money before transferred to your hotel. Today you can explore Yangon along with an English-speaking guide and private car with driver. Visit the central Sule pagoda, located amidst many buildings from the British colonial era. Also, the Chauktatgyi Buddha, a huge reclining Buddha, should not be missed. In the late afternoon you can visit the Shwedagon Pagoda (or Shwedagon Paya, as the Myanmar say), the Golden Glory of Myanmar, an imposing edifice and perhaps one of the most impressive temples in the world. Sunset is the best time to see this impressive monument. By nightfall many townspeople come to the Shwedagon to walk their rounds around the pagoda and meanwhile to meet friends and acquaintances there. It is also very nice to go to the Yangon river and witness the bustling river life with its many ferries.
Day 2 Yangon - Inle Lake
A short flight takes you to Heho, from where you can access the Shan State. An hour drive from Heho takes you to Nyaungshwe, a small town located on the shore of the Inle lake. Along the way you take a scenic drive through the countryside and the Shan Hills. This is one of the traditional agricultural areas of Burma where you also see many rice fields, corn fields and farmers with ox-carts along the roadside. Nyaungshwe is a relaxing place and base to explore the area. You can stroll through the market, bike through the countryside, and take boat trips across the lake. In the town itself you can visit some monasteries, a market, and there are many restaurants and shops.
Day 3 Inle Lake
Today is a free day to enjoy the beautiful lake. We definitely recommend that you book a day trip to explore the lake, the villages, monasteries and floating markets by boat. In the towns around the lake you will also find a large rotating market place, and should one of the market days occur when you are there, you can see such a market, where many mountain peoples come down to visit.
Day 4 Inle Lake
Today you can continue with the exploration of Inle Lake. You can take a day trip to the less-visited southern edge of the lake, and via small channels you can sail to the village of Indein. Here you will find a group of pagodas dating from the 16th century. The whole place exudes a wonderful rural tranquility. Next, visit the village Ywa Ma. Here you will find some forging workshops of silver and gold. You will return to Nyaungshwe in late afternoon.
Day 5 Inle Lake - Pindaya - Kalaw
From Inle Lake we will first drive to Pindaya before proceeding to Kalaw. In Pindaya you can visit the beautiful caves with thousands of Buddhas. Kalaw was originally founded as a British hill station and is at approximately 1300 meters of elevation. It is a nice town and it is worth visiting the market. In Kalaw you can also find many British colonial houses. In addition, Kalaw also has a large Indian community and you will find Hindu and Sikh temples. There is a small, bustling market that happens once in 5 days which many Palaung and Pa 'O peoples visit.
Day 6 Kalaw
Today you have a free day in Kalaw. The fresh, hilly area around Kalaw invites hikes. You can take a short walk or choose our walking tour of six hours. In addition, you will visit some villages of the Palaung and Pa'o population.
Day 7 Kalaw - Mandalay
In the morning you will visit villages of the Pa'o and the Shan. In the afternoon you fly from Heho to Mandalay, one of Myanmar’s largest and best known cities. The town lies on the eastern bank of the Irrawaddy (Ayeyarwaddy). It has a large market and a vibrant river life and is surrounded by many attractions.

On the outskirts of the city you can visit Mandalay Hill. From here you have a beautiful view of the surrounding area. In the vicinity of the hill are several pagodas, monasteries and temples. You can also visit the palace where the last kings of Burma (Myanmar) lived. The palace was largely burned down during World War II, but in recent years has been completely renovated. The whole picture gives a rather soulless impression, partly because it is surrounded by military complexes, but it gives an idea of how the Myanmar rulers have previously and splendidly built their own palaces.
Day 8 Mandalay
Today is a full day excursion where you visit the nearby Amarapura. You start with an informative visit to a workshop to see how gold leaf is made. You will encounter this gold again later in the day. Then you quickly go to the monastic school, Mahagandhayon Monastic Institute, where hundreds of monks walk in procession down the street to receive their food. From there you drive to Amarapura, best known for for its beautiful teak U Bein Bridge dating from 1849. This walkway is around 1200 meters long and goes across the wide Taungthaman Lake. It is wonderful to watch people come and go on the bridge; the monks in their red robes stand out against the bright water and sky.

In and around Amarapura you will find several buildings that recall the once-glorious times of the city. After lunch you will drive to the Mahamuni temple, one of the holiest temples of Burma. According to legend, the bronze Buddha statue was created in the prescence of Buddha himself. Over the centuries, the picture has been completely covered with gold and gold leaf is added daily to the image. You saw in the morning how this gold leaf is made. At the end of the day you visit Mandalay Hill. The climb to the summit rewards you with a magnificent view of the surrounding area. At the foot of Mandalay Hill is the Shwenandaw monastery, a magnificent teak monastery and a highlight of Burmese architecture. Nearby is the Kuthodaw pagoda, also described as the world's largest book. The best-known teachings of Buddha are chiseled into the marble on the walls.
Day 9 Mandalay / excursion Mingun
Today is a half-day excursion by boat to Mingun. At the lively river quay on the Irrawaddy (Ayeyarwaddy) you board a boat that takes you slowly to Mingun. Here there is the Mingun Pagoda, a building that was once intended as one of the largest pagodas in the world. Earthquakes and deceased kings threw a wrench in the works, however; the pagoda has never reached its full glory, but is still an impressive edifice in a relaxed, rural setting. On the banks of the Irrawaddy (Ayeyarwaddy) there are more pagodas, including those of Hsinbyume. After the visit you sail back to Mandalay.
Day 10 Mandalay - Bagan
A domestic flight brings you to Bagan. Bagan is undoubtedly Myanmar's most famous attraction, and rightly so; it is one of the most beautiful temple complexes in the world. On the eastern bank of Ayeyarwaddy River, you will find an area of 40 square kilometers covered in endless temples, pagodas and monasteries built between the 11th and 13th centuries. It is an enchanting experience to climb one of the temples during sunrise or sunset and look out over the landscape. As far as you can see there are temples scattered across the plain and farmers with their herds wandering among them. Bagan is best explored by bicycle or horse cart. Because of the vastness of the area you will have to choose which temples to visit. Note that these temples - like all temples in Myanmar - can only be entered barefoot. During the warm periods this may mean that the stone floors are piping hot from the sun. It pays to visit the temples early in the day or at the end of the afternoon.
Day 11 Bagan / excursion
Today you visit the most important temples of Bagan. After breakfast you first walk around the colorful local market. Then you start by visiting one of the main pagodas, the Shwezigon pagoda; built by King Anawrahta in the 11th century. You also visit a temple with beautiful panoramic views over the plain of Bagan. Of course you visit the Ananda temple, an architectural masterpiece with its four large standing Buddhas. In the afternoon you'll visit the village of Myinkaba where you can find many lacquer workshops. Next stops are the 11th century Mon-style temple Manuha and the Nanbaya sandstone temple. You'll end the day watching the sunset from one of the upper temples. It's wonderful to watch the sun set over the many pagodas of Bagan, with a backdrop of the Irrawaddy (Ayeyarwaddy). It is also possible to take a boat trip on the Irrawaddy (Ayeyarwaddy) at sunset.
Day 12 Bagan
A free day in Bagan. Want to explore the temples on your own? Or maybe you want to book a bike trip or a visit to Mt. Popa?
Day 13 Bagan - Yangon
You now return to the former Burmese (Myanmar) capital. Visit one of the pagodas, stroll around the always colorful Bogyoke Aung San market, or have tea or coffee at tea shop, or stroll along the street side food vendors at the Strand Road (Kannar Road). It is also nice to explore the active river life, and it is especially beautiful at sunset time. Hundreds of boats and ferries are sailing and occasionally dock on the street to get all commuters home. You could also return to the Shwedagon Pagoda as this impressive building is well worth a second visit.
